Albion Street and Commercial Street Scheme

Location

Albion Street and Commercial Street are located in the centre of Morley.  A number of businesses are located within this area as well as other community assets like Morley Library.

We would like your thoughts on the outline designs below before progressing to the next stage of design. 

Why is this scheme important?

Albion Street and Commercial Street junction forms an important part of the Morley Town Investment Plan to improve the town centre environment and improve the journey into the high street for those living in Morley. 

These particular streets have narrow footways with poor quality materials and do not feel connected to the main high street in Morley. 

This scheme will increase the visibility of this part of the town centre and encourage more people to visit the businesses and other places on these streets.  

Core objectives of the scheme

• To widen the footways and upgrade with high quality materials similar to those on Queen Street. 
• Provide an improved pedestrian environment and reduce the impact of vehicular traffic.
• To increase the size and space of the town centre and ensure the long term success of the businesses and other community assets like Morley Library. 
• To provide a more attractive setting and improved streetscape. 
• To bring more greenery and biodiversity into the heart of Morley town centre 

Scheme proposals

We aim to improve Commercial Street and Albion Street through the following interventions which are shown on the designs below: 

Albion Street 

• Removing an unused lane of the road (but keeping it open for cars and buses).
• Widening footways into the unused space.
• New high quality materials to match the good quality buildings and other streets.
• Retaining the existing disabled parking spaces.

Commercial Street

• Making the road one way to allow the footway to be widened.
• Wider footways with high quality materials.
• Tree planting. 
• Retaining on-street parking.
• Raised crossings at key locations.

• Detailed design: Autumn 2023
• Award contract: End of 2023 
• Start on site: End of 2023/early 2024

Commercial Street 

• Consultation: July-Sept 2023
• Detailed design: Autumn 2023
• Approvals and legal orders: Autumn 2023
• Award contract: End of 2023
• Start on site: Early 2024
